Overcoming Travel Anxiety
Sometimes travelling can be a scary thing. Things can go wrong and sometimes you can find yourself panicking over the smallest things. I thought I'd make this blog post as well to help you overcome any travel anxiety you might have. Let's all help each other out because travelling does not have to be a bad thing and the last thing you want is to be filled with anxiety before you travel.
So here are some of my tips for overcoming travel anxiety.
1. Relax
Everything is going to be fine. You can make travelling much easier if you just relax. I know it's easier said than done. Honestly though it's a great time to relax because you are visiting a new place and basically going on an adventure. Sometimes the best part of going away is not the destination but the journey itself. So just relax.
2. Pack what you can carry
I know it's very tempting to pack everything but the kitchen sink and to pack things just in case. However, sometimes travelling can be so much easier if you pack what you can carry. You may need to lift your suitcase to carry up some stairs or drag your stuff around the airport or a train station. It is so much easier to travel when you can actually carry your luggage. Personally when I'm travelling I like to take a suitcase and a backpack because at least one hand plus this makes it so much easier to carry my luggage around.
3. Reserve a seat (if you can)
I always didn't see the point of reserving a seat but it actually does give you a piece of mind knowing that you can sit down when you're travelling. You also know that nobody can take away that seat from you and you know you won't be standing the whole time of your journey. So definitely reserve a seat if you can.
4. Read over any travel guidelines or regulations
Especially when you're in an airport, it's always good to follow their packing regulations and make sure your luggage is not overweight or you follow the correct liquid allowance in your hand luggage. There's many reasons why they have these rules and regulations so it's good to make sure you follow them. It definitely saves you the hassle and stress knowing you have followed the guidelines.
5. Note down all your times and dates
As much as it's easy to check the times and dates on your phone. It's always good to have a physical copy just in case your phone dies on you and you have no idea what time you're travelling. This is good for trains especially because it's good to note down what time your connections are. It just gives you a peace of mind knowing it's not the end of the world if your phone dies.
6. Double check! Triple check!
Honestly if you don't double check or triple check everything before you travel then you're travelling wrong. This includes the tickets with all the times and dates, making sure all the correct details are there and you have all the important documents like your passport, travel card etc. Making sure you've packed everything you need to and checking it twice maybe even three times. Double and triple checking everything before you travel will make you feel more relaxed knowing you have everything you need to travel and you know exactly the times and dates you're travelling.
7. Don't forget your phone charger
This is just a little reminder but it is an important thing to bring. At least if you have your phone charger and it's in your day bag/hand luggage then you can charge your phone in the airport or station so at least if there is a problem then you have a way of phoning or texting someone in case of an emergency. So it's always good to remember your phone charger when you're travelling, just in case.
8. Take a pen
You never know when you're going to need a pen. Whether it's to sign something, fill out a survey or make a note of something. It's always good to have a pen on you when you're travelling.
9. Ask for help
Don't be afraid to ask for help. There are plenty of people around who can help you out and it's their job to help you out. Then can find out what gate your flight is on or what platform your train is on. Especially if you're travelling alone, don't feel like you are completely alone. Talk to a member of staff and I can guarantee they will help you out or point you in the right direction. Don't be afraid to ask for some help when you're travelling.
10. Everything will be okay
Sometimes the most unpredictable things happen when you're travelling. The weather might be bad, things could be delayed or cancelled. It's inevitable that something may go wrong when you're travelling but just remember everything will be okay. Try not to get too stressed or upset if something happens. Usually there's people on hand who will tell you what's going on and they may offer you a refund or another connection at a later time or date. Just think you will get to your destination eventually. If you stay calm and relaxed then everything will be okay. Also don't forget to breathe.
Anyway, that's all my tips for overcoming travel anxiety. I hope they were helpful to any of you who are travelling soon. Let me know if you have any other tips for overcoming travel anxiety that I might have missed. Maybe we can help each other out and make travelling just a little bit easier.
Thank you for reading and I'll be back again soon with another post.
See you then.
