Things I Regret About University
As someone who decided to go to university twice, I have to say that there were a lot of good points about going to university. There were a lot of things I'd wish I'd done differently so here are five things I regret about university.
1. Moving into a student house
For my second year, I moved into a student house and it was great because it was nice to have my own place plus I got to share with three others. It was nice to have our own bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room. Plus it was a nice house. However, one thing that happened was it did feel a bit isolated from university. Freshers were definitely not the same and it definitely didn't feel like we were a part of the action on campus even though we were a five minute walk away. We never really got involved with any student events and it just felt like we were out of the way from other students. As much I loved living in the student house as it was nicer than halls to an extent, however it was very isolating.
2. Doing a master's degree during a pandemic
Now hopefully this only ever happens once in everyone's lifetime but I decided to do a master's degree in 2020. For those of you that remember was the year of the pandemic filled with self isolations, social distancing, online classes, face masks, and no toilet paper in shops. Fun times. I could have deferred a year but because I'd applied and got accepted before the pandemic hit. Plus I was ready to take the next step in my life. Plus I thought things might get better and everything would just go back to normal by the time I went to university. How wrong I was. In the beginning, I was able to move to Manchester and get to do face to face lectures for a while. Then of course things got worse so the online lectures took over and then I never had a face to face lecture again. It definitely didn't feel like university, especially for four months I was stuck at home because it was recommended not to travel. At least I got a discount on my rent but it wasn't the same as the first time I went to university. I got unlucky because I was on the top floor and only two other people lived in the flat I lived in and I hardly saw them. It was kind of tricky because there wasn't really an opportunity to meet people. The only people I interacted with were on my course but even then it wasn't the same as meeting face to face. I wish I'd deferred a year because I would have had a chance to meet more people had I done my master's during normal times.
3. Media Studies
My degree was in advertising and media studies because it was a combined course. At the time, I thought they'd go hand in hand. Now I kind of regret that decision because the part I loved about my degree was advertising and being creative whereas media studies was more about theory and studying things like news and documentaries. I did enjoy some aspects of it like my dissertation but I also didn't enjoy the essays we had to do. I kind of wish I'd chosen to do advertising on its own or do film studies instead as I do enjoy film. However, I am grateful that I did do media studies as I had a great dissertation supervisor who was one of my media studies lecturers and I don't think I would have gotten a good mark on my dissertation without her so I am grateful for that. If I had to do my whole university degree again though, I might have chosen to do either advertising on its own or advertising and film studies. Sorry, media studies.
4. Not joining a club or society
The issue I had with my university was that there weren't many clubs or societies. It was mainly just sports and not much else so unless you were into a sport you couldn't really join any other clubs or societies. I do wish there were more options at my university for clubs because it would have been nice to make more friends while I was at university. I do feel like I missed out on an opportunity there.
5. Making more friends
Something I really wish I had done was make more friends at university and perhaps if I'd done things differently like stay in halls or joined a club or society or even did my degree out of a pandemic then perhaps I would have made more friends. It would have been nice to make lifelong friends that I'd be able to see from time to time but sadly it doesn't seem to be the case. It wasn't a lack of trying because I did try but sometimes life gets in the way and things happen. One thing I do regret from university is not making as many friends. Perhaps if I had my chance again, I would have made more of an effort.
There we have it. Those are five things I regret about university. Let me know if you have any regrets about university in the comments below. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I'll be back again tomorrow with another post.
See you then.
