Why I Started Blogging
Ten years ago tomorrow was the day seventeen year old me decided to start my blog and publish my first post. One of the burning questions that many bloggers get is why did they start their blog? What inspired me to create my blog Megan Time ten years ago? Well, grab a drink and a snack because I'm about to tell you the story of my little blog.
History Lesson
I'm going to take you back to May 2014. I was a seventeen year old in my first year of doing my A Levels and essentially in my penultimate year of school. Something that I really enjoyed doing in my spare time was watching YouTube. I think 2014 for most of us was the era where YouTube really kicked off. I watched a lot of British YouTubers like Dan & Phil and Zoella as well as some others. Now I kind of got a creative bug. I wanted to start my own thing and believe or not, I had dabbled in blogging before but nothing really concrete. I can remember I was trying to do a magazine/advice kind of blog but honestly, I don't even remember what it was called but I soon deleted it. I knew I didn't want to be in front of the camera and be a YouTuber. However, I was inspired by Zoella to create my own blog. One day I decided to log onto Blogspot (which is now Blogger) and create my own little blog. I called it Megan Time.
Why Megan Time?
Honestly, I was playing around with a few names and I didn't really want my full name on it. I wanted to be a little anonymous to my blog but I felt it had to have my first name as that's my name. Time just came out of nowhere but honestly, I liked it as I see my blog as a place where people can come to take some time out of their day to read my blog. Plus the more I saw it, the more I liked it. I wish I had more of a profound meaning to the name but honestly, it just came out of nowhere and stuck around for ten years.
My first post
Oh boy, I need to go back and edit that first post because of all the spelling and grammar mistakes. Plus the way I wrote, you can tell it was done by a seventeen year old. I also believe I just wrote out the post and didn't even read it. I just hit publish. I decided to do a little introduction post just to explain who I was as well as do a 25 question tag post because I was inspired by YouTubers. I didn't even say where I got the 25 questions from but I'm pretty sure I got it from a YouTuber but I can't remember which one as it was so long ago or I may have just googled a 25 question tag. Who even knows where the tag came from? I just thought it would be fun getting to know me questions in the introduction post. Even though it's lacking a lot in editing, it's where it all began and I can look back on it to see how far I've come. I've learned to use spell checkers and read through my posts before hitting publish.
My Second Post
Believe or not, I actually posted twice that day and created a second post. I think I was trying to boost page views and I thought posting twice in one day might help. I would soon learn I'd have to work hard to get people to read my blog. It was the Common White Girl Tag. Again, inspired by a YouTube tag. Don't judge me. I was just trying to answer questions and I hadn't really thought about the kind of blog I'd be. I think I was trying to be a blog version of my favourite YouTubers. Not completely copy them but just similar to their style of content but in blog posts instead of videos. I also just had fun answering questions. Very random.
Taking Blogging Seriously
Now I ended up making 14 posts in 2014 which is obviously not that great. To be honest, I didn't really take it seriously as after my first two posts I didn't post again until June just to announce I'd finished my AS Exams. Then I took a break until October where I started taking my blog a bit more seriously. Although I did have school at the time as that September 2014 was the start of my final year of school, I was doing my A Levels and also deciding what university I was going to. Blogging was still a hobby for me but I started posting a lot more than when I first began towards the end of 2014. I was at my peak during 2015 and 2016 where I posted a lot because I wanted to make a go at being a blogger. I knew I had to post a lot to get readers so I did. Eventually my blog started growing. A crazy day was when I hit 2000 page views on my blog. I still don't know how it happened but it did and I was so excited because I hadn't even hit over 1000 page views so when one day my post had over 2000 page views, I was buzzing. It really gave me inspiration to keep going with my blog.
Blogger's Block
Now, for those who have read my blog for a few years now will know I've had a tiny problem with getting blogger's block and the first case of this was 2017. I don't know what happened but I had no motivation to write blog posts. It was during my second year of university and I guess all my focus was on that which meant I'd not put any focus on my blog. When I get into these blocks with my blog, I get self doubt that what I'm posting is not good enough or I just don't think the post is any good then I stop myself from posting. I am aware that wasn't the only time as it happened again in 2021 and in 2023 last year. Nothing big was going on in my life but I just lacked a lot of motivation to blog. Everytime I tried to get back into it, that self doubt came back then before I knew it a few months would pass. Luckily each time a burst of motivation would bring me back to my blog and here I am to this day writing this post for you.
It's been a rollercoaster
This blog has been a rollercoaster of emotion for me and it amazes me I've gone through so many life events on this blog. I'm proud of the posts I've made, even my first ever post because it got me to where I am today. Ten years later and still blogging. Honestly, I wouldn't give up this blog for anything. Even if I've gone through a couple of blogger's block moments, I've always come back and that's the beauty of this blog. It's my little baby. My piece of the internet where I can just be me. I love this blog because it makes me happy that I get to write what I want and the best feeling is hitting that publish button after working hard on each post. It's honestly a great feeling knowing I'm sharing my thoughts and feelings with the world. I know my blog continues to grow even now with over 100,000 page views. Seventeen year old me would not have believed we'd ever reach that milestone but we did and I'm honestly so proud of this blog.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that's taking the time to read my blog. It means so much to me that people are taking the time to view and read my blog. I like to think people are taking in my advice or maybe they've learned something new or they've enjoyed reading about my experiences. Either way, thank you so much for viewing my blog because it makes blogging worthwhile knowing someone's reading it.
There we have it. Tomorrow is my ten year anniversary of this blog. It's been a journey and I'm so grateful to you readers. That's the story of why I started my blog. Thank you for taking the time to read it, especially if you've read this far. Thank you and I truly hope you have a wonderful day today.
That's all I have to say for now but I'll be back again tomorrow with my blog's tenth anniversary post.
See you then.
