Favourite Reads Of 2024
In 2024, according to my good reads. I've read sixty books which is kind of crazy. I may have cheated a little and listened to audiobooks which in my opinion counts as reading the book because you're still consuming the story just in audio form rather than written form. I also read the entire A Series of Unfortunate Events and also all the Horrid Henry books which I mainly did for nostalgia purposes. That's why I read so many books this year but I thought I'd break down what my favourite reads of 2024 were. Let's get started.
A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Series By Holly Jackson
So I got around to finishing the final two books and the novella which I really enjoyed. Especially the final book. No spoilers but there’s a part two of the book that makes it all worth it. I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed Holly Jackson’s work this year but particularly the last two books of the series were incredible. I still need to get around to watching the new tv series of the show but I’ve had a few other shows to watch before I commit to it. Either way this was one of my favourites this year.
A Series Of Unfortunate Events By Lemony Snicket
I’ve been meaning to read the whole series for the longest time. However, due to my school library not having the books in order and eventually giving up. I just never got around to reading it then I watched the Netflix series so I didn’t end up reading. Then one day I picked up my kindle and I had the six books on my kindle so I decided to commit and read it. I’m glad I did because it felt like a personal accomplishment that I finally read the series. Granted I do understand that it’s not for a 27 year old target audience but that aside I do enjoy the story and the Baudelaire children are really unlucky throughout the whole series which is obviously the point of the name. Yet I do enjoy reading but even when finishing the book, it still leaves a load of unanswered questions. I think the show does a good job of answering some of those questions and I know there’s the Beatrice letters but I think I’m done with reading the series. I enjoyed it and definitely took up a big chunk of my reading this year.
This Spells Love By Kate Robb
I really enjoyed this book. It was such a good story. The amount of times I've wished I could forget an ex and pretend it never happened. Yet this story reminds you that you should always be careful what you wish for. Meeting an ex could have resulted in you also meeting your long time best friend that you secretly have feelings for. However, if you never met your ex then your friend won't know who you are. This is what this story is about when Gemma makes that mistake and now has to try and convince her best friend to kiss her to reverse the wish but this results in Gemma realising her feelings for him. This story was cute and felt good. It was one of those books I couldn't put down and was a very fun read.
The Happiest Ever After By Milly Johnson
This book was another favourite of mine. Polly is an author who is writing a story with the main character called Sabrina who is a perfect version of herself as Polly's life is so great with a bad job and recently been cheated on by her boyfriend. However, a few unexpected events cause Polly to suffer from amnesia and forget who she really is. Instead, she believes she is Sabrina and ends up helping out at a family run Italian restaurant that has been threatened with closure. This story follows Polly living her new life as Sabrina, not remembering her old life as Polly. Yet everything soon catches up with her. This book was fun with lots of unexpected twists. It shows that you can manage to get a new life even after your partner cheats on you and you feel like your life is over. In this case with Polly it was quite literally where she becomes a whole new person but the sentiment is this. I really enjoyed this and it was a fun feel good contemporary romance story to read.
The Reappearance Of Rachel Price By Holly Jackson
Holly Jackson does it again. I really enjoyed this story because there were so many twists and turns in it. It was one of those who dunnit situations where it could have literally been anyone being the villain of the story. Bel was the only witness to her mother's disappearance but Bel was only a toddler when her mother disappeared. Now the case is being dragged up again in a true crime documentary. Yet as the documentary comes to an end, a plot twist comes in the form of Rachel Price returning. This leads Bel's world turned upside down as she has many more questions and wonders what really happened to her mother. There were so many plot twists and had a really good mystery where you were questioning all the characters' motives. I did have a little guess as I was reading but still the ending was a big plot twist that I didn't see coming. Definitely enjoyed this. Probably would have been my top spot had I not read the next book on this list that claims that spot.
Watching You By Lisa Jewell
This was definitely my number one read of 2024. I loved this story so much because it had so many plot twists to it. I just by chance came across this book on my Amazon recommendation list and decided to give it a go. It's basically a story about nosy neighbours, except not the innocent kind. It makes you realise that you never know who's watching you or how observant your neighbours might be. This story has a lot of different perspectives and has a mystery where someone gets murdered. Yet it's not known who has been murdered and who the murderer is. This story could have gone in many directions especially when it involves a head teacher who is beloved by many but has a few secrets of his own. You don't really know who is innocent and who is not in this story. Then like with any good story, there was a huge plot twist that just threw me so much as I didn't see it coming and made me want to read on to see what happens next. I didn't even expect how this story would end. I honestly couldn't put this down and read it within a few days of starting it. It was so good and definitely the best book I've read this year. Especially as I've grown to enjoy the genre of true crime, this story was definitely one of those ones you get invested into and why it is my favourite book this year.
What Does It Feel Like? By Sophie Kinsella
This novella was honestly beautiful. When I bought it, I didn't even realise it was a novella. I just saw it was by Sophie Kinsella and I had to get it as I have all her books. I read it and I couldn't put it down. It's such a heartbreaking yet real story. It's about a successful novelist called Eve who wakes up in hospital with no memory of why she's there when her husband tells her a tumour had to be removed from her brain. This leads Eve having to learn to walk, talk and write again while also dealing with her devastating diagnosis. It's a story that helps you deal with grief and upset over life changing news but also seeing the silver lining of it all. I was moved by the story but the part that got to me most of all was the Author's note at the end. I don't always read the Author's note or the acknowledgements in books but this one caught my eye. I didn't realise how personal this book was to Sophie Kinsella until reading that Author's Note. This book is worth reading just for the Author's note. It's a heartbreaking reality that people have to deal with these life changing diagnoses and it's a scary world out there. It just shows that you never really know what is going to happen in life and we should make the most of the life we have because it could all change in an instant.
There we have it, those are my favourite reads of 2024. Let me know what your favourite book is of 2024, I'd love to hear it. Thank you for taking the time to view my blog and I'll be back soon with another post.
See you then.
